Gaziantep Fuel System Fault

Fuel pressure · injector · Gaziantep

Fuel system faults usually show up as hard starting, shaking or power loss under load. What tells them apart is requested versus actual pressure, together with the injector correction values.

Low and high pressure circuits

In modern systems fuel is carried in two stages. The pump in the tank sends fuel at low pressure to the high pressure pump, which raises it to the level injection needs.

Faults in these two circuits produce different symptoms. A problem on the low pressure side mostly appears under load and when hot; the high pressure side shows itself at first start and on sudden throttle openings.

Fuel system fault symptoms

  • Hard starting

Long cranking, particularly on a cold or hot engine.

  • Shaking at idle

    Imbalance between cylinders.

  • Power loss under load

Pressure dropping on a gradient or under acceleration.

  • Engine warning light

An entry relating to pressure or to the injector circuit.

  • Smoke from the exhaust

Smoke from unburnt fuel with a leaking injector.

  • Rising fuel consumption

    A disrupted spray pattern.

Measured values

On the fuel side the decision comes from measurement, not from parts.

  • Requested / actual rail pressure

Compared at first start, at idle and under load.

  • Injector correction values

Cylinder-by-cylinder deviations can point directly to the problem injector.

  • Return flow test

The return quantities of the injectors are compared to find the leaking one.

  • Low pressure value

Supply problems from the tank pump and the filter.

  • Pressure regulator behaviour

Whether the pressure response matches the regulator command.

  • Fuel filter and lines

Restriction, air ingress and sealing checks.

How do we diagnose the fuel system?

Replacing injectors is expensive; first we look at what the pressure and the corrections are saying.

  1. Code and freeze frame

The operating condition under which the fault was logged is established.

  2. Pressure monitoring

Requested and actual pressure are logged during cranking, at idle and under load.

  3. Correction analysis

    Cylinder-by-cylinder correction values are compared.

  4. Return flow measurement

If needed, injector return quantities are measured.

  5. Supply side check

The low pressure value and the condition of the filter are assessed.

  6. Mechanical separation

It is checked whether a compression or mechanical problem is presenting itself as a fuel fault.

  7. Verification

After repair, pressure and correction values are read again under the same conditions.

How is the solution decided?

On the fuel side the decision rests on measurement; replacing injectors is not the first option.

  • Filter and supply repair

Restriction or air ingress on the low pressure side is fixed.

  • Injector cleaning

If the spray pattern is disrupted, cleaning is considered.

  • Injector renewal

If the return flow measurement identifies a leaking injector, that injector is replaced.

  • Pump or regulator work

If pressure cannot be built, the high pressure side is addressed.

  • Line and sealing repair

Problems from lines, unions and connectors are repaired.

  • Coding and adaptation

Compensation values for replaced injectors are entered to the manufacturer's procedure.
